Wheaton DUI driver: “I strike Ike.”*

* Okay, if you don’t get the cheesy pun here, try revisiting mid-20th century American political history.

A citizen who variously calls west Wheaton & West Virginia home has brought our downtrodden unincorporated area more unwanted distinction and notoriety.

Yes, Mr. Kendall S. Smith was apparently celebrating the end of the shortest month of the year with a few too many brewskis yesterday.  He plowed his pickup into the SUV carrying County Executive Ike Leggett and MoCo “First Lady” Catherine Leggett.

Here’s the story as reported in the Post and Gazette.

State court records indicate that Smith has racked up quite a few DUI/DWI and moving violations, like too many local drivers.

We hope that Mr. & Mrs. Leggett recover quickly and that they consider a push to tighten up state drunk-driving penalties and heighten enforcement measures.

Ah, yet another proud son of Wheaton.

Squictus, a fair number of west Wheatonians are actually pretty nomadic overall.

I can’t get too cheeky about these folks because we live near many people with records and rap sheets.  Would the world miss another unhinged overwrought blogger if he/she were to be bludgeoned to a macerated pulp by an insulted neighbor with a hair-trigger temper?  Maybe, maybe not.

A lot of these neighbors happen to be packing, too.

Btw, I firmly believe people can turn their lives around and get their act together if you give them a chance or two.

The silver lining is that many of these characters make colorful and interesting neighbors.  And if you’re lucky, they’re also good about leaving you the $@#! alone.  After all, “People in glass houses…”
